Jason was taking his walks again, and they were helping. Taking time to himself and thinking things through, processing shit. Sometimes he brought Ella with, sometimes not. She was really good at listening and the best part is that she didn't spill his secrets.
It was during his walks that he found the treehouse Anna had mentioned in her will. When Jason had started on the plans for building the house, he'd settled on the largest clearing he could find.
The treehouse wasn't in a clearing though. It was hidden away up on the side of the mountain, near a small lake and waterfall. It wasn't easy to get to, but it was worth the hike. When he had found it, it was empty inside, but a bit of shopping and a lot of pinpoint use, and it was suitably furnished. He'd even gone so far to install a steel, childproof mesh on the windows so Ella wouldn't fall out. Amazingly enough, it had a generator, but Jason wasn't sure how it was powered. He didn't even check to see, orther than to find out there wasn't any place to put fuel in. It was probably magic of some sort and he wasn't messing with it. At least the small refrigerator he'd bought was running.
He'd kept it to himself for now though, going there to hide and swim, just get away from everything. His own little hideaway. For a while.
Today though, he was curled up on the deck, staring out over the land. Cel's words had shook him up, made him doubt himself, and he'd had to leave the house to keep Gabe from making him talk. The last thing he needed was Gabe pissed off and wanting Cel's blood on top of everything else.
Back against the wall, knees drawn up, fingers of one hand running slowly over his collar. That was the source of his agitation, Cel's attitude toward i's meaning, and the fact that there were possibly others thinking the same. That he was Gabriel's 'wife', the 'woman' in the relationship. And some part of him worried that he was seen as less for it, that they didn't see him as a person for it.
It wasn't true though. It hadn't been forced on him, it had been welcomed. He had chosen this, asked for it. He had worked and sacrificed to get to a place where he was comfortable and happy, had been through hell to find someone he felt safe enough with.
And if Gabe decided to change things later on, he could. Because Jason trusted Gabe with his life, trusted him not to take it too far. Just like Jason knew that if Gabe did, he was strong enough to say no. The was the biggest change, Jason knew he could say no, knew he was strong enough to do it.
Taking a deep breath, he turns and stretches out on the deck, fingers still tracing the edge of his collar. He didn't know what Cel's problem was, why he had to go where he did in there talk, but he wasn't going to let it get to him. He wasn't going to let Cel's words make him doubt himself and Gabe.
He was stronger than that.
Reaching for his cell phone, he pushes Gabe's number and waits, then leaves a message. "Gabe. How about a game of hide and seek? The path is pretty straight from the house to where I am. If you don't want to do that, use the pinpoint." He disconnects then laughs, realising he'd forgot to give the coordinates.
Oh well, Gabe would find him. He always did.
