Jason wakes quietly, stretched out on his bed, laying over the covers. He was alive, in his bed, in his room, in his house. Alive, not dead. Somehow, someway, he had come back.
The sun is just starting to show, the horizon a pale pink. It doesn't take him more than a few seconds to realise Gabe isn't there. His mate's scent still lingering in the room, but days old.
'He's not here.' The words ring through his head, slamming hard against those last few mental walls. It's all he can do to keep from screaming.
Because he knows, Gabe died before him and if Gabe was meant to come back with him, he would have been waiting. He wasn't though. He, Jason, was alone.
Curls up into a ball, sobbing as something inside him shatters. He wishes he had stayed dead.
